Hot Toddy Tutorial

Hot Toddy Tutorial

WARNING: this contains alcohol, so please use caution when making and consuming this product.

Hot Toddies were something my father would make when I was sick. I don't really know what it was about this concoction that made me feel better, but it always soothed my throat, softened my cough and made me sleep like a baby! Yes, it contains alcohol but you control the amount, so it is typically less alcohol than homeopathic cough syrup, and considerably cheaper.

Here is the recipe and instructions for the Hot Toddies my father made! I hope you enjoy this! My children have not had these yet, but I've been making them for family and friends for years--everyone says it works like a charm

Ingredients needed for your own Hot Toddies.

Ingredients:

Brandy - any brand will do, just make sure you use Brandy.
Water
Sugar or honey
Juice of one-half of a lemon

Sugar or honey. I always use sugar but honey is actually better.
Water
Measure out 1/2 cup of plain old tap water.
Add two Tablespoons of sugar or honey to the water.
Place in the microwave for about 1-2 minutes. You want the water bubbly because the sugar needs to melt into the water.
Remove from microwave. Stir well.

Sugar must melt prior to adding other ingredients.
This is what the melted sugar and water potion looks like. Give it a good stir.

Strain lemon juice, you don't want seeds.
Cut a large lemon in half. Strain over mesh so you don't get lemon seeds in your Toddy. That would be gross.
Seeds.
See, you don't want to swallow these bad boys.
Adding the Brandy.
Add a minimum of one Tablespoon of Brandy to the mixture. If you are feeling festive, add about 3-4 Tablespoons for an adult, but never, ever that much for a younger person.

The finished product!
Ahhh......just like my Daddy used to make.

  2. I have been crazy sick this past week, so I could use this. I've heard of Hot Toddies before, but I had no idea they were good for colds! Thanks for the recipe! :)

    1. They are wonderful for colds. You do not need to use much Brandy, it's the honey or sugar with the lemon that really hits the spot.
